Start2Farm Together

Start2Farm Together supports beginning farmer and rancher training

The Start2Farm Together program brings trainers and service providers together to share resources and best practices. The successful future of new and beginning farmers and ranchers (BFRs) rests in the ability of educators and service providers to effectively meet the needs of BFRs by instituting training programs and other services. Start2Farm wants to work with you to make this happen.

By joining with existing conferences, Start2Farm Together is able to bring trainers and service providers to the people they serve, diminishing schedule conflicts and allowing educators to focus more time and resources on helping farmers. By providing this programming at your conference, we can help bring trainers and service providers to your event.

What is Start2Farm Together? »

Start2Farm Together sessions are unlike traditional conference sessions. Instead of a panel of speakers, a discussion facilitator offers a short presentation that introduces a topic and some of the key issues surrounding that issue. The rest of the session is a constructive dialogue by all participants in which the issues are discussed and best practices and resources shared. These sessions do not rely solely on the expertise of one or a few experts, but rather are able to call on the expertise of the whole group. Topics from past conferences include financial management, business planning, risk management, marketing, business succession , tax and labor , food safety, and scaling up operations.

Alternatively, Start2Farm Together may bring in train the trainer workshops to provide specialized training from established experts. The exact programming is decided in conjunction with you and your planning committee.

Start2Farm Together can schedule programming either as a pre-conference event or as a simultaneous track to the conference schedule. Having a pre-conference event allows attendees to focus on the Start2Farm Together sessions and still attend the conference programming. Simultaneous programming provides options to educators and service providers who are not always the focus of farmer conference programming.

What Will Start2Farm Together Do? »

Start2Farm Together will work with your planning staff to determine the desired topics and sessions. We will guarantee the presence and quality of the required facilitators and educators to run our sessions. We will publicize the event on the Start2Farm.gov website and through our beginning farmer and rancher networks. Start2Farm Together solicits and manages sponsorships for the program through our partnership with the American Farm Bureau Federation. The programming we provide trainers and service providers will help draw them to your conference.

What Does Start2Farm Together Require of Partners? »

Partnering conferences and meetings will contribute to a successful Start2Farm Togethermeeting by providing the following:

  1. Time in the meeting schedule, either in pre-conference sessions or as a simultaneous track.
  2. Start2Farm Together sessions listed in the conference program.
  3. Room(s) that can accommodate the expected numbers in attendance. The number and size of rooms will vary depending on the event and the expected turn out.
  4. Registration for Start2Farm Together facilitators and educators, as well as information about conference hotels and other travel logistics provided in a timely manner. We do not ask partners to provide free or discounted registration unless they are providing it to all conference speakers.
  5. Inclusion of the Start2Farm name and/or logo in conference advertising and announcements.
  6. Room in the conference program to list Start2Farm Together sponsors.
  7. It is fundamental to the mission and success of Start2Farm to provide assistance and information to all beginning farmers and ranchers regardless of operation size, production practices, race, gender, or ethnicity. We expect our partners to share our mission to support all beginning farmers and ranchers.
